Some green suggestions
Want to do more for the environment? Why not:- ask your employer to let you work at home for one or more days a week
- visit online editions of newspapers rather than creating more dead tree press
- ask for documents to be sent to you electronically rather than in paper form
- scan any paper documents you receive
- if you are a subscriber to The Actuary magazine, why not ask them to stop sending you a paper copy, give you a reduced subscription and look at the online issue instead?

Institute Council election 2009 results: not elected, but many thanks to those who voted for me!
I attended the Institute AGM at Staple Inn earlier today, and, unfortunately (or fortunately from your point of view – and from my point of view, I have plenty of other things to be doing!) I was not successful in … Continue reading
UK actuarial leaders: where do you stand on the key issue of communications to members and the public?
I have just made this post on the Actuarial Outpost, calling for clarification of what seems to have been the biggest source of strife within the UK actuarial profession over the last 19 months: What general principles should members of … Continue reading
Institute Council election update 8: some overseas members received ballot papers after deadline
I heard yesterday (23 Sep 2009) from a South African FIA who had only just received his paper voting papers, 2 days after the deadline for voting had passed! (The paper voting papers contained the passwords needed for voting online). … Continue reading

US actuaries’ experience shows Actuarial Outpost = the Google of actuarial forums
The well known saying is that those who are ignorant of history are condemned to re-live it. Here is a case in point: The UK actuarial profession is now on to its fifth official merger discussion forum in less than … Continue reading
Institute Council Election 2009 – update 6, shouldn’t full details of Institute Council elections be published?
Please see the following topic I created earlier this evening in the UK/Europe section on the Actuarial Outpost, at http://www.actuarialoutpost.com/actuarial_discussion_forum/showthread.php?t=175020. (I had started a discussion privately with the Institute and the other Council candidates, but the more I thought about … Continue reading
Time to move at least part of the UK merger debate on to Actuarial Outpost
In the interests of openness, transparency and accountability, and also maximising engagement with members, I think the time has come to start having at least part of the UK discussions about Councils’ latest consultation on merger plans (started 10 Sep … Continue reading
In the US, they do things very differently: AAA in very public dispute, but likely to resolve problems quickly!
The American Academy of Actuaries is currently involved in a very messy public dispute re corporate governance – see http://www.bakosenterprises.com/Academy/ and http://www.actuarialoutpost.com/actuarial_discussion_forum/showthread.php?t=174617. (Actuarial Outpost is a very popular actuarial forum [run by the recruitment agency DW Simpson] used mainly by … Continue reading
Institute Council election 2009 – update 5
This is a copy of a reply to the following question from an Institute member: are there any circumstances in which I would vote in favour of a merger, and if so, an example would help? Again, I have previously … Continue reading
Institute Council election 2009 – update 4
This post is in direct response to the question posed to me: why did you vote against the recent (CAP) merger? The full details can be seen on this blog (particularly under posts marked with the Merger tag) and in … Continue reading
